A new green lung has begun to develop in the capital of Durango. Thanks to a joint project between the City Council's Environmental Department, the Red Ambiental company, and the local Caliente baseball team. The initiative is linked to a unique dynamic: for each home run hit by the team, a microforest is installed in different urban areas, involving both educational institutions and resident communities.
In this last microforest, which joins the other three already existing, More than 150 trees have been planted, with heights ranging from 1,5 to 2 meters.Among the species chosen, acacias stand out, considered essential for the recovery and improvement of urban spaces thanks to their ability to adapt, its rapid growth and its contribution to local biodiversity.
The location of this microforest directly benefits the Ricardo RenterÃa secondary school and the Francisco de Goya and Lázaro Cárdenas kindergartens, as well as the residents of the La Coruña subdivision. Residents and students will be able to enjoy cooler and healthier environments. where trees will provide shade, mitigate the urban heat island effect and contribute to the reduction of environmental pollutants.
In the list of species selected for this plantation Not only acacias appear, but also ash trees, brooms, crape trees, bougainvillea trees, and mesquites, thus favoring the plant diversity in the area. This variety not only beautifies, but provides shelter and food for birds and pollinating insects in the environment.
Albino Ponce Barrón, head of the Department of the Environment, highlighted the importance of joint efforts between public and private organizations to create urban microforests, emphasizing that "the goal is to promote greener and healthier spaces for all ages, involving students and families in the protection and care of natural areas."
The social commitment of the participating entities has been one of the key elements in this program. The Caliente baseball team, in addition to its athletic performance, has been actively involved in planting and maintaining microforests, providing an example of environmental responsibility for local youth.
According to the organizers, the goal is to expand the microforest network by collaborating with more local businesses and associations. This strategy, beyond contributing to the landscape, has the main objective of improving air quality and raising awareness about the importance of urban vegetation for the well-being of the inhabitants of Durango..
Initiatives such as planting acacia trees and other species in public spaces not only transform the immediate environment but also strengthen the role of nature within cities, providing environmental, social, and educational benefits both in the short and long term.
