Improved oxygenation in Seville's ponds

  • The Seville City Council has installed more than twenty aerators in the lakes of three parks.
  • The investment amounts to 192.591 euros and seeks to improve water quality and ecological balance.
  • The new equipment includes submerged diffusers and ballasted pipes adapted to each water level.
  • This will be complemented with maintenance and awareness measures to discourage feeding ducks and fish.

Urban pond in a Seville park

The Seville City Council has launched an ambitious project to improve water quality in the lakes and ponds of several city parks. With an investment of nearly €200.000, more than twenty aerators have been installed to oxygenate the water and curb the proliferation of algae and unpleasant odors.

The project, which is now complete, affects the Tamarguillo, Miraflores, and Infanta Elena parks, three green spaces very popular with Seville residents. The Parks and Gardens Delegate, Evelia Rincón, explained that this is not merely an aesthetic measure, but a technical solution to improve the ecological functioning of these urban aquatic ecosystems.

A customized aeration system for each lake

The installed equipment includes aerators, submerged diffusers, ballasted pipes, and a dedicated electrical system, all adapted to the specific characteristics of each pond. The goal is to increase dissolved oxygen, improve water circulation, and maintain a balance between temperature, nutrients, and oxygen . According to the City Council, the previous equipment did not have sufficient capacity to oxygenate the entire surface area, so a specific intervention was designed to reinforce the system.

Complementary measures and public awareness

The project goes beyond simply installing the sprinklers. The City Council will also modify maintenance routines around the lakes, reducing the amount of grass clippings and organic matter that may fall into the water. Furthermore, an information campaign will be launched asking residents not to feed the ducks and fish , as these external inputs contribute to increased nutrients, algae growth, and a decline in water quality. The councilwoman emphasized that in a city like Seville, high temperatures directly impact the water's ability to retain oxygen, making continuous maintenance crucial to preventing problems.

The investment of €192.591 will allow the lakes in these three parks to maintain a better ecological balance, reducing unpleasant odors and sludge buildup, and providing a healthier environment for both wildlife and visitors. The combination of aeration technology and good maintenance practices ensures more sustainable management of these urban water features.
