The management of biowaste at the household level is experiencing a significant boost in several Valencian regions thanks to the involvement of local residents. The COR Waste Consortium has seen its strategy of treating organic matter at the source become established as a real and efficient alternative, allowing kitchen and garden waste to return to the soil as nutrients instead of ending up in landfills.
The latest data confirms that nearly 1.300 families have already adopted this daily habit, making the environmental impact more than evident. In the last year, this collective effort prevented the generation of 572 tons of waste, a figure that helps to understand the magnitude of a change in mindset that is gaining ground in households in the area.
A snapshot of participation by region and municipality
Looking at the participation map, Vall d'Albaida leads the way with a total of 453 households involved. Within this region, towns like Ontinyent, with 178 families, and l'Olleria, with 44, demonstrate that environmental awareness is deeply rooted in the area. The Costera region is not far behind, with towns like XÃ tiva and Canals topping the statistics with 58 and 53 participants respectively, totaling 251 families across the entire area.
The initiative is also gaining significant traction in the Canal de Navarrés region, where Enguera stands out with 117 registered households out of a total of 227. Meanwhile, the Safor region contributes 195 families to the project, with Oliva and Palma de Gandia leading the way . Finally, in the Ayora Valley, 143 households have decided to take the plunge, the vast majority (119 registered) concentrated in the municipality of Ayora, reflecting a very strong local commitment.
It's interesting to see how the project isn't confined to homes, but has also reached classrooms. Currently, there are 30 active programs in schools , ensuring that young people learn the value of circularity from an early age. This educational foundation is essential to ensure that the growth of 213 new families joining in the last year isn't just a passing trend, but rather a continued upward trend.
From waste to resource: direct benefits at home

One of the most attractive aspects for those who decide to install a composter is obtaining a high-quality product free of charge. Annually, families participating in the program generate more than 114 tons of natural fertilizer , which they use in their own gardens or pots. This represents a direct saving, as they don't have to buy commercial substrates, closing the organic matter cycle without leaving their own plot or home.
From a logistical standpoint, the savings are massive. Those 572 tons that weren't thrown into the gray bin are visually equivalent to about 60 fewer garbage trucks on the road. By avoiding the collection and transport of this heavy, wet waste, CO2 emissions and operating costs are reduced, which ultimately benefits all taxpayers in the five districts involved.
The key to success lies in the fact that when residents get into the habit of separating cardboard, glass, and plastic, and also manage their own food scraps, the so-called residual waste almost completely disappears. It's a simple change in routine that transforms what was once a nuisance into a valuable resource, demonstrating that prevention is the most powerful tool we have for caring for our immediate environment.
The consortium's technical team plays a vital role in this process, guiding citizens to make composting a breeze. Thanks to this guidance, participants are able to efficiently transform 1.560 kilograms of organic matter daily . This coordinated effort between institutions and citizens has ensured that the COR program is not just a statement of intent, but a tangible reality that improves the sustainability of the Valencian region day after day.
