A massive start and the assembly of the mantle
The raising of the image that will preside over the structure of the mantle brought together more than 15.000 people, in a solemn and already multitudinous act in the Plaza del Pilar, with the attendance of the mayor, Natalia Chueca, and the Archbishop of Zaragoza, Carlos Escribano.
The gesture of raising the figure above the 15,5-meter structure once again underlines the collective nature of the Offering. Participants in this preparation Infanticos del Pilar with its usual ejaculation and a group of jotas, culminating with the national anthem.

Although the devotion is secular, the Flower Offering, as we know it, began in 1958 as a simple act funded by the City Council: for a couple of hours, some 2.000 people They offered carnations to the Virgin in front of the basilica.
The tradition grew until it became the axis of the festivities. In 1998, the filmmaker Bigas Luna He proposed moving the image to the center of the plaza and elevating it on a large pyramid, a solution that increased the visibility and capacity of the floral mantle.
Among the historical curiosities, the Offering was the first act outside Madrid broadcast live on RTVE. In addition, the Cross of Lorraine, incorporated in 1960, was linked to the charitable drive in the fight against tuberculosis.
The festive calendar of Pilar was set in 1723, and since then popular devotion was consolidated with spontaneous offerings until the city structured the act outside the temple, today with a massive character.
