La red cabbage It is one of the most beautiful horticultural plants: its purple leaves are especially striking, as they also have a unique flavor. Its cultivation is very simple, so much so that it is not necessary that you have previous experience in the maintenance of plants.
Being a vegetable that is grown for the consumption of leaves, you can have it both in the garden and in a pot. How? Following our advice, you will see how easy it is to enjoy delicious dishes with red cabbage.
The best time to grow red cabbage is in spring, when the minimum temperatures are above 15ºC. So once the good weather comes we can sow them in seedling trays with universal growing medium, putting a maximum of two seeds in each alveolus so that it is easier for us to separate them if they both germinate.
It is important that they are on the surface of the substrate, and cover them with only a very thin layer of soil, otherwise they'll have a hard time germinating. To prevent them from spilling out of the alveoli, we'll water with a spray bottle. It takes longer than watering with a watering can, but this way we'll ensure all the seeds stay in place.
Once sown, we will place the seedbed in an area where it gets direct sunlight, and we will keep the substrate moist. When the seedlings are a manageable height (about 5 cm), we can transfer them to individual pots with universal growing medium or to the garden, which we will have previously fertilized with organic fertilizers such as chicken manure. For better plant health, you can learn more about brassicas which are planted next to red cabbage.
If we want to avoid having pests It is highly advisable to plant mint, lemon balm, rosemary, thyme or nasturtium nearby, which are plants that will keep parasites away. Of course, we do not have to plant strawberries or beans nearby, as we would not get them to have good growth.
The time of harvest is approximately 5-6 months after sowing, so it is advisable to take into account the sowing and germination process for proper monitoring of red cabbage cultivation.
